The use of SSCS high tensile strength buoyant frond Scour Control Systems provides a permanent maintenance free solution for the stabilisation of the seabed whilst avoiding any interference with fishing or other environmental issues or creating secondary scour or possible damage to cables or pipelines, all of which could occur with other alternatives.
SSCS is the only manufacturer of a field proven scour control product that uses the concept of a continuous viscous drag barrier of overlapping lines of polypropylene fronds to reduce current velocity thereby using those mechanisms which create scour to correct and prevent scour occurring.
The use of continuous frond lines is vital as opposed to the deployment of spaced clumps of fronds which have failed previously and have been proven to be hydrodynamically ineffective. All frond lines are secured either in high strength machine sewn webbing and attached to patented safe anchors or in moulded concrete base blocks: "tie on" or rope attachments are NOT used. The SSCS Tensile Strength per frond strip is typically between 681N and 1181N. Where concrete base blocks are not used secure anchoring is essential.
LONG TERM RESISTANCE TO FATIGUE combined with HIGH TENSILE STRENGTH are FUNDAMENTAL TO SUCCESS in the shallower offshore / coastal regions such as those sites so far approved for the UK offshore wind farms.
Each standard Mat or Mattress with fronds 1.25m high should build up a sand sediment bank in excess of 0.9m in height, and up to 1.05m, which will provide sediment stability in the form of a gently contoured sloping bank which typically extends out from the fronded area for some 1.8 to 2.2m. This sediment bank prevents or corrects scour and provides dropped object protection and protection from trawling activities; it also naturally encourages marine life wherever installed. For shallow depths the use of short fronds 0.625m in height is a well proven option but provides a lower height sediment bank.
